Community Supported Agriculture ( CSA )
March 16, 2009
Community Supported Agriculture ( CSA ) is a great way to purchase fresh, local, organically grown produce. CSA farms offer produce subscriptions, where buyers receive a weekly or monthly basket of produce, flowers, fruits, eggs, milk, meats, or any sort of different farm products. Typically, you pay a subscription fee to the farm at the beginning of the growing season and the CSA arranges several local locations for weekly pickup of the produce.
This is also a great way to broaden your produce horizons as you only get the produce currently in season. So in June, you will likely get strawberries, onions, salad greens, broccoli and potatoes. But in July, you may still receive onions and potatoes but blueberries, tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, peaches and carrots will be added. In August, a whole new rainbow of produce will grace your weekly box.
There are over 2000 CSAs in the United States, search for a CSA near you by entering your zip code at Local Harvest.
