Guest Post by Mommy Goes Green reader, Amanda Schmidt:
I never considered cloth diapers…theyre icky… all diapers are icky, though, right?! My husband discovered gDiapers & I brushed him off. I insisted we were going to use cheap diapers that we could buy in huge quantities.
As I progressed through my pregnancy, I became obessed and somewhat neurotic about all things green & eco-savvy. I heard a quote from Crazy Horse: “Treat the earth well: it was not given to you by your parents, it was loaned to you by your children. We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors, we borrow it from our Children” and it resonated with me. What kind of Earth would I be leaving my daughter. Thus my quest begun for all things natural: childbirth, cleaning products, and ?! cloth diapers !?.
I discovered gDiapers (gdiapers.com) and told my husband about them, to which he fell over laughing because I completely removed the memory of him discovering them and telling me about them from my mind. Oops. I claimed mom-nesia very early in my pregnancy.
The company was founded by Jason & Kim Graham-Nye as they searched out an alternative to the approximately 27.4 billion disposable diapers are used each year in the U.S. alone (according to the EPA, that translates into more than 3.4 million tons of waste dumped into landfills). Their company was coined gDiapers and the g stands for GREEN and emerged in their native country: Australia.
Their concept is simple, its a modified cloth diaper. The outer little gpant is made of a soft, breathable outer cotton/elastene fabric allowing a slight stretch and comes in the cutest colors imaginable!! They velcro in the back so little fingers have a harder time finding the tabs. We have never had one come off. The snap-in liners are made of breathable polyurethane coated nylon, not pvc like a lot diaper covers. The liners are also breathable to help prevent diaper rash. We have never had a problem with diaper rash!! The flushable inserts are a combination of materials. The outer material of flushables is viscose rayon, a natural polymer that comes from trees. It is the only polymer used in the textile industry that comes from a natural, renewable and non-fossil fuel source. It is both compostable and flushable. The fabric has a stay dry feel, which keeps your baby happy. We The contents of the flushable are made of soft, fluffed wood pulp and super absorber (SAP). Like the outer material, the inside of the flushable comes from sustainably managed forests using an elemental-chlorine-free (ECF) process. The diapers are sized to fit babes 8 – 36lbs.
The inserts are not only flushable, like I mentioned earlier, the wet ones are also fabulous to compost in your own back yard. And if you dont compost, you can throw them away: they break down in 50-150 days! Thats a lot better than the hundreds of years disposable diapers sit in landfils.
My family loves gDiapers! We are completely obsessed! Not only does my little babe have the cutest bum on the block, we are feeling pretty good about our eco-game.
The gDiaper starter kit is perfect to try the product without going in too deep. It comes with 2 little gPants, 10 flushable inserts, 3 snap-in liners, a swish stick (to help in the flushing process) and a users introduction guide.
