Organic Jammies Worth the Extra Bucks
August 24, 2009
My 3 year old just got a pair of jammies made by New Jammies and they are adorable! They are covered in tangerines ( see photo of model ) and I love that they are 100% organic cotton for 2 reasons:
1. Conventional cotton crops require heavy use of insecticides and pesticides – approximately 25% of the world’s insecticides and more than 10% of the pesticides.
2. You often find kid’s pajamas are ‘flame resistant’ meaning that some chemical has been added to ensure this. It takes 50+ washes to get the chemical out of the material.
I’m trying as much as I can to limit chemical exposure where I can – IN our bodies and ON our bodies. Now, I can’t afford to replace all her pajamas with organic ones but when I’m doing the buying, I look for organic. I recently stumbled upon organic jammies at Costco – for $11! I am stocking up for both my daughter and my son due this fall. If you can’t spring for organic, the Environmental Working Group recommends pajamas made with natural fibers that are inherently fire resistant and snug-fitting. ( and keep kids away from matches, candles and cigarettes – DUH! )
New Jammies comes in cute fruit and vegetable prints, sport prints and this fall, they are coming out with animal prints. They also carry onesies and footed pajamas for infants – all in 100% organic cotton.

My favorite organic pajamas are from Hanna Andersson – http://www.hannaandersson.com. On babies, having a zipper is sooooo nice! The bigger sizes have the two piece sets either long sleeves/pants or short sleeves/pants. Their colors and designs are really fun and they don’t seem to fade even though we are on boy #2 and wash them frequently!!
