Ive been using CFLs for a long time-- my parents have always been frugal and replaced all their bulbs when they first came out in the early 90s. BUT, Im really excited about emerging LED technology-- they use less energy, last longer than cfl, are less fragile, and no mercury! Unfortunately they are not very affordable yet, BUT I did find some bulbs for recessed lighting at costco for about $14! They also have the larger LED lights for outdoor motion detectors for about $18. The other unfortunate thing is that the light is very white and doesn't come in the color ranges that cfl does, but right now I have 2 LEDs in my kitchen mixing with 2 soft white CFLs and the color is just fine. Once regular bulbs are more affordable though, I am going to replace all my cfls with LED when they burn out.
