Toxic America with Dr. Sanjay Gupta
May 31, 2010
Set your DVR for CNN on Tuesday and Wednesday night, June 2 and 3 at 8PM EST. Dr. Sanjay Gupta will be exploring ‘Toxic America’ in a 2-part series. Tuesday night will investigate Mossville, a community in Louisiana, that is surrounded by 14 chemical plants that continually leak chemicals known to cause cancer.
For moms, part 2 in the series will be even more interesting. Toxic Childhood will look at the effect toxic chemicals have on children, unborn and born. Did you know unborn babies have over 200 chemicals already in their bodies? These chemicals include bisphenol-A ( found in plastics ), lead ( found in water, toys, paint ), flame retardants ( found in children’s pajamas, furniture ), and PFOA (found in Teflon coated pots and pans ).
Don’t miss this informational documentary – and get your spouse and family to tune in. It’s a great way to educate everyone in your children’s life.

I just found your website through a safemama post and think it’s fantastic! I just wanted to share my thoughts on Toxic Childhood with someone else who watched the program. Overall, I thought it was decent. I’m always glad when mainstream media covers the subject matter that is near and dear to my heart. I felt like the woman they had on to be the voice of the opposition (“everything is safe, you are all overreacting”) was so cartoonish that it was hard to take her seriously – which I suppose was the point. But I felt like a couple of the things she said could have been directly refuted (like her explanation on the FDA’s stance toward BPA) and was disappointed that Dr. Gupta didn’t do so. I did like the tips at the end for cleaner living, and was reassured that I already am on board with most of the suggestions. What did you think of the program?
Hi Amber, I had similar feelings as you. I am always happy when topics like BPA, lead and PFOA come up in the media because other parents start to pay attention. I take all these things seriously but I know that not everyone is interested in the information like I am. You are totally right – that woman was ‘interesting’ – I hadn’t thought about them using her so she wouldn’t be taken seriously but that makes sense now. I thought the most helpful part of the show to most of the public was probably the 10 tips at the very end. Nothing was new to me and like you, I felt good that I’m already following all of those things. My husband and I watched it together and it was good for him to see that I’m not the only one with these concerns! I hope they continue investigating these types of issues and reporting on them! Thanks for reading Amber!
