Safe Bath Toys – PVC Free, Phthalate Free, BPA Free

baby-bath-toys-710661

This post was updated here in the 2014 Guide to Safer Bath Toys.

I was recently at Babies ‘R Us looking through the bath toys for a last minute addition to a baby shower gift.  I looked through everything they had but couldn’t find even one bath toy that wasn’t plastic or at least plastic and labeled ‘PVC Free’ so I skipped on the baby toy and found something else.  Now I’m on a mission to find bath toys – that you can find locally at some of the big box stores – that are safe so you can avoid the same experience!

Boon Odd Duck

Boon Odd Duck

BOON –  Finally, a PVC free rubber duckie!  You can be confident buying ANY of the BOON bath toys because they are all PVC, BPA and phthalate FREE!  In addition to their rubber duckies, they have several other bath toys for all ages.  Locally, you can find Boon products at Babies R Us, babyGap, buybuyBaby, Baby Depot and Target.

Summer Infant Digital Temperature Tester

Summer Infant Digital Temperature Tester

Summer Infant– The 3 bath toys that the company confirmed were PVC, phthalate and BPA free are the digital temperature tester, tub time bubble maker, and tub time light up stacker.

199-Item

Sassy Tubby Tumblers

Sassy – Although the packaging isn’t labeled, all of the bath toys currently listed on the Sassy website are PVC, phthalate and BPA free.  Sassy did say that 3 toys DO have BPA and may still be in stores, so stay away from these: rubber duckie with temperature gauge, Gator Boat, and Sassy Car Wash.

Infantino– I inquired and the response from Infantino was that their toys “conform with the safety regulations and have the allowable amounts of PVC and phthalates.”  So I would stay away from Infantino.

Although I’ve only included some of the major manufacturers here, you can also find many other brands of bath toys that are safe at local baby boutiques.

If there are any particular brands you are curious about, let us know!  We’ll find out how safe they are.

Kid’s PVC Free Rain Boots and Gear

octobers

I adore October as it’s the last of the sunny, dry days in the Pacific NW. Come November, the long rainy winter begins and we start needing waterproof clothing and shoes on a daily basis.

Waterproof gear for children is often made with PVC (the “poison plastic“) so I’ve gathered together some really cute PVC free options to put on our kiddos this winter.

western-chief

Western Chief :  My kids have worn these coordinating boots and raincoats for years (they carry umbrellas, too). The boots are 100% waterproof, natural rubber boots and have a non slip sole.  The raincoats are made of 100% polyurethane shell and polyester/cotton lining. There are dozens of darling patterns like lady bugs to popular characters (see Batman, Hello Kitty, Spiderman above), horses, frogs, flowers, and other classic designs. They also make boots for teens and adults.

hatley
Hatley :  The Hatley line of raingear includes rubber boots made of 100% latex rubber with a cotton lining and their raincoats have a 100% polyurethane shell and polyester terry lining. Classic designs include apples, horses, dinosaurs, helicopters, unicorns and many more. Solid colors also available.

oakiwearoakiwear3

Oakiwear : This local-to-me company offers outdoor gear for kids: 100% rubber rain boots, neoprene muck boots, and a one-piece waterproof rain suit. The rain suit is their #1 selling item and I can see why. 100% waterproof, PVC-free, reflective tape: it’s the perfect off-season outfit for kids.

kushies

Kushies : The hooded rain jacket and pant set is sized for kids ages 1-3.  The visor on the hood is a nice detail to keep rain off a little one’s face. Made of PVC-free vinyl and lined with cotton, comes in 6 colors.

For teens and adults looking for stylish PVC-free rain gear, check out Chooka, Hunter, Kamik, or Joules.

PVC Free Outdoor Play

We’ve spent the last three weeks enjoying the sunshine outdoors and I’ve realized that it’s time to get some new outdoor toys for my (almost!) 3 year old.  She keeps hijacking the neighbor’s toys and that can only last for so long!  Many of the outdoor toys on the market are made of plastic and contain PVC, which I’m trying to avoid, if possible.

sandgroup1GreenToys has a couple outdoor toys this year, the Ecosaucer Flying Disc ($6) and Sand Play Set ($15).  The Ecosaucer (a.k.a. Frisbee) is made in the USA with 100% recycled plastic milk containers.  Mass retailers such as Target and Toys ‘R’ Us carry GreenToys or you can order them online at Amazon.com

31d7r62s0al__sl210_Who doesn’t have fond childhood memories of their Radio Flyer wagon?  Well Radio Flyer has not only metal and wood wagons but they have now have a ‘green’ Radio Flyer ( literally ), the Earth Flyer.  Made from 100% recycled plastic milk jugs, each wagon diverts 230 milk jugs from landfills. ($130)

4164xsoeoxl__sl500_aa280_Sprig Toys is dedicated to manufacturing toys using earth-friendly materials including recycled wood and reclaimed plastic.   Their Hollow Dunebug’s Sand Truck Playset is designed to be played with in the water, sand or dirt. ($15)

il_430xn_70131449This brilliant mother designs clothesline tents out of felt (made from 100% recycled plastic bottles) for use outside on clotheslines.  Throw it over a clothesline and secure with 4 tent stakes.  After play, you can throw it in the wash if needed.  A large window on one side and three flower sky light windows on the other side provide great views for cloud watching and breezes blowing through. Large appliques add charm so your tent looks great in your yard or in your house. You can customize the house ( my favorite thing about products on Etsy! ).  I LOVE this idea so much that I’m already thinking about getting myself a clothesline!  Brilliant! ($70)

index_set_1Now for the granddaddy of outdoor toys, a swingset.  I like CedarWorks because the wood used in their playsets is naturally splinter-free and naturally rot-resistant, so there is no need to add chemicals (like arsenic) by staining, painting or pressure-treating the wood.

KIDDIE POOLS – The best kiddie pool option that I stumbled upon is a hard one made from #2 plastic and sold at Toys ‘R’s Us – make sure to check the bottom of the pool when buying it, it should have a #2 on it.  For reasons NOT to buy a soft plastic pool, check Grist’s commentary.

If you can’t find a PVC free alternative to an item you really want, your next best bet is to buy used because the toy has already off-gassed.  Find a list of places to find used goods here.

Baby Wipe Alternatives

Baby wipes have become a staple in our house over the last couple years, not only for diaper changes but for on-the-go travel, too.  However, once a few moms started investigating what was in their baby wipes, they came up with alternatives to the traditional baby wipes.  You might find a new favorite, too!

16234_xe-001_package_500x500-300x300Elements Naturals – After an Oregon mom discovered that the baby wipe she used on her first baby consisted of wood pulp, rayon, polyester, plastic, parabens, and other harsh chemicals, she created Elements Naturals.  The baby wipe is the first and only wipe that is 100% natural and produced from annually renewable materials – it’s also 100% compostable!  The packaging is also recyclable. I’ve been using these wipes for the past month and they work as well as the traditional brand I use – they are slightly bigger than the norm.  I haven’t composted any of them but that is one HUGE advantage over traditional wipes – less waste.  Available at Diapers.com. $5.99  Read to the end of the post for a chance to win a FREE pack of Elements Naturals wipes!

juice-2tBaby Wipe Juice – DIY, especially in this economy, is a great way to save money.  In this case, it also reduces waste.  Baby Wipe Juice is just that – combined with a little water and poured over cloth wipes or paper towels, you can make your own wipes at home.  It takes 1 minute to make a week’s worth of wipes.  And the cost savings – this bottle makes 2 gallons of of wipe juice!  $12.75
Through May 31st, Lusa Organics is offering 5 free cloth wipes with every purchase of Baby Wipe Juice.  Use code: green04 for the discount.

baby_clean_wipes_largeEco-Me Baby Wipes Kit – There’s something about a kit that I like – it’s all-in-one. The Eco-Me kit includes refillable/reusable/recyclable jar, 35 wipes, single use Baby Blend essential oil and vinegar. You add water, mix Eco-Me ingredients and make your own natural baby wipes. Vinegar reduces bacteria & odor, essential oils calms & freshens. Eco-Me Baby Blend Essential oil is a proprietary blend of Chamomile, Lavender, Calendula & Petitgrain pure plant oils. $7.50

3111ogmkiyl__sl500_aa280_2Seventh Generation Baby Wipes – If you like using traditional wipes but want to ditch the chemicals, try Seventh Generation Wipes. They leave out the alcohol, chlorine bleach and synthetical chemicals of conventional wipes and are moistened with natural aloe vera, vitamin E, and water. $4.98
