Eco Easter Basket Giveaway from Stubby Pencil Studio
March 2, 2010
Stubby Pencil Studio is one of our favorite resources for unique, eco-friendly gifts for children. It’s also a great place to pick up quality choices for your Easter baskets. Here are a few fun finds:
Washable Markers – I know Kate, the owner of Stubby Pencil Studio, has searched high and low for eco-friendly markers. So far, these are the best she’s found. They are non-toxic, made in the USA, and manufactured with 25% recycled plastic.
Yummy Earth Organic Lollipops – we tried these out months ago and totally agree, they are YUMMY!
Sparkle Star Crayons – These multi-colored, star shaped crayons are made from 100% recycled crayons.
Wooden Bead Necklace – I’m always leary of buying cheap jewelry for my daughter as it’s often found to be tainted with lead. This wooden necklace relieves my fears as it’s painted with non-toxic nitro-cellulose paint tested and found to be safe for children and non-polluting in natural water sources.
Envirosax Animal Planet Bird – I love Envirosax and this bird bag for kids is adorable! It would make a great reusable Easter basket.
Wooden Harmonica – every child loves playing the harmonica. This wooden one is painted with non-toxic nitro-cellulose paint tested and found to be safe for children and non-polluting in natural water sources.

10 Green Stocking Stuffers Under $10
November 16, 2009
It’s THAT time again – music in stores, lights on houses, the smell of evergreen and pine. Whether you wait for Thanksgiving to pass or not – the Christmas season has arrived and the shopping has begun. Over the next several weeks, we’ll be highlighting great green gifts for your family and friends.
One of my favorite websites to shop for unique kid’s toys is Stubby Pencil Studio. Mom and owner, Kate Rosenthal, stocks eco products for creative kids that are non-toxic and environmentally responsible.
This holiday season, skip the dollar bins – you never know what’s in those cheap products (check the ingredients, I often find phthalates, lead warnings or PVC) and pick up your kid’s stocking stuffers at Stubby Pencil Studio – all under $10 and much safer for your family. Here are some of my favorites:
Holiday Smencils- Grab these first, they were sold out last year! 5 limited edition gourmet scented pencils made from 100% recycled newspapers. Each Holiday Smencil comes packaged in its own (recyclable) Freshness Tube and come in 5 fun scents: Cinnamon, Sugar Plum, Candy Cane, Gingerbread & Sugar Cookie. $6.50
Star Crayons- I can’t get enough of fun shaped crayons and your kids won’t either. Each box holds 20 crayon stars in assorted colors and are made from 100% recycled crayons from the National Crayon Recycling Program. Purchasing eco stars supports recycling education and employs people with disabilities. $8.95
Monkey Pencils – Your kids will love taking these to school. 3 monkey pencils made from natural, chemical free rubber wood, and finished with non-toxic and child friendly colors. $2.95
YoYo- You can’t go wrong with a yoyo for any kid. This classic yoyo is made from a wood called Ankudu and color is 100% lead-free, non-toxic vegetable dye and the lacquer comes from the sap of a rosewood tree. $5.95
Envirosax for Kids- If you’ve been reading MGG long, you’d know that I love my Envirosax bags. Now our kids can have one, too. My daughter loves to put things in purses and bags and carry them around the house, to school and into the store with me. Envirosax are a great way to introduce our kids to an eco-friendly lifestyle. They come in 8 different designs. $8.00
Color ‘n Kids Card Sets – This is a great way to personalize notes from your kids. All cards are printed on 100% PCW recycled stock and come with 6 colored envelopes: red, orange, yellow, lime green, green and blue. Cards measure 4.25″ x 5.5″. Purchase 3 sets and receive a complimentary box of 24 vivid color pencils. $7.95
Rainbox Softdough- Mary’s Softdough is a soft, non-crumbly modeling dough made from 100% food-quality ingredients. Completely non-toxic, this colorful tub of dough will last up to a year and provide hours of fun. An 18 oz. tub holds a rainbow of colors: red, yellow, green, blue and purple. Ingredients include flour, water, salt, cream of tartar, soybean oil, food coloring and sodium benzoate (a food preservative). $9.95
Softdough Tool Set- No playdough set would be complete without tools to roll and cut the dough. This 12 piece set includes a hardwood rolling pin and assorted cookie cutters: moon, star, sun, cloud, leaf, heart, frog, squirrel, butterfly, dragonfly, and turtle. $7.95

BornFree
November 11, 2009
When I had my daughter three years ago, I didn’t know anything about bisphenol A (BPA). It took about a year before I heard about it but by then my daughter was no longer using bottles. At that time, one of the first companies with BPA-free bottles was BornFree. Since then, BornFree has developed a whole line of products for children that are safe – BPA, phthalate and PVC free.
They have both plastic and glass bottles with nipples in 5 different flow rates and silicone sleeves for the glass bottles. If you use a breast pump, they have an adaptor for use with most pumps and the BornFree wide neck bottles. For kids ready to move past a bottle, they have cups with interchangeable soft and hard spouts – great for long term cup use. You can put all the bottles, cups and nipples in the top rack of your dishwasher. Again, all products are BPA, PVC and phthalate free.
A couple new products that have come out with are pacifiers and teethers. The orthodontic silicone pacifier features an orthodontic collapsible teat that encourages the natural development of baby’s teeth and gums and a breathable shield to reduce skin irritation and protect sensitive skin. The teether is made from medical grade silicone to stimulate and soothe baby’s gums and teeth during teething. You can store it in the refrigerator and has a built in place to put teething gel, if you use it. For babies 6 months and up, BornFree has a gum brush to clean teeth of plaque and bacteria from teeth and gums. It can also be stored in the refrigerator.
If you are a new mom, make sure to add BornFree products to your registry and the gift sets would be great shower gifts. You can find BornFree products at Babies R Us, Target, Diapers.com, buybuy Baby, Whole Foods and many other local baby boutiques.
If you are still unsure why BPA free bottles and feeding products are necessary, comb through this site. BPA is a hormone disrupting chemical that is harmful to both our health and the environment. You’ll find that many bottle manufacturers have removed BPA from their bottles in the past 12-24 months. If you aren’t sure whether or not your bottles are BPA free, I would recycle them and get new ones!
BornFree products are recommended by Dr. Greene, a well-known pediatrician and father of four. You may recognize him from one of his books, “Raising Baby Green” or “Feeding Baby Green”. I haven’t read “Feeding Baby Green” yet, but it’s on my reading list! I’ve heard great things about it.
FREE STUFF: BornFree has generously given me a couple of their fantastic products to give away to you! You can win a set of bottles, pacifiers and a teether by entering in one (or both) of the following ways:
- Leave a comment with a question for Dr. Greene. We’ll be sending him a list of questions to be answered in a later post!
- Follow us on twitter @mommygoesgreen and retweet this contest.

Congratulations to Jeni from Pennsylvania for winning the BornFree baby products!
Jolly Llama Sorbet
November 9, 2009

Several months ago, my husband decided to start eating healthier and we’ve tried to keep high calorie foods out of the house. He’s been sucking down popsicles or sorbet as a low calorie dessert so when Jolly Llama sent us samples of their sorbet frozen treats – we were eager to try them. The first thing I look for when buying frozen treats are their ingredients, I don’t want anything with high fructose corn syrup and I want REAL fruit! I occasionally make frozen treats at home – with real fruit and no sugar – so I know it’s possible.
Jolly Llama meets the criteria, their sorbets are made with sun-ripened whole fruit and naturally sweetened with cane sugar. They don’t add any artificial sweeteners or corn syrups and they are gluten free and dairy free for those with allergies. Each tube of sorbet is only 70 – 90 calories and fat free so they are a great replacement for higher calorie treats.
Our whole family has been eating the Jolly Llama sorbets and we love them! They come in 4 flavors : blueberry, mango, strawberry and acai and they are super creamy and full of flavor. My three-year-old chooses the sorbet over ice cream – that’s a good sign!
Currently, you can buy Jolly Llama sorbets at stores in Arizona and California OR you can order a case for home delivery.
FREE STUFF: Jolly Llama is generously giving away 1 case ( 24 sorbets ) to 1 lucky winner!
You can enter to win in any of the following ways:
- Tell us what YOU look for in a frozen treat and be honest – if it’s “whatever is on sale”, then tell us!
- Follow us on twitter @mommygoesgreen and retweet this contest.

Mommy Goes Green Green Goodies Giveaway!!
October 15, 2009
Are you a mama trying to go green? I have a bunch of fun products to pass on to you to get your “going green” going on. Check out the products below and find out how you can win over $50 worth of green goodies for your home and baby!
Earth Friendly Products is a family business that is committed to educating consumers, providing convenient, alternative cleaning product choices, and encouraging use of non-toxic cleaning products. Their manufacturing plants are in the U.S. and they source their ingredients locally. What a great business to support. Their Eco Breeze Fabric Refresher is a great replacement for that “other” fabric refresher you keep on hand. The Eco Breeze is totally non toxic containing ingredients you can pronounce like grapefruit seed extract, lavender and mint oil.
EcoTools are a staple in my cosmetic bag. I use the Recycled Retractable Kabuki Brush every day and have one to pass on to you, too. You will love it – it’s SO soft on your face.
ThinkBaby bottles are BPA free, lead free and phthalate free. One of the coolest things about these bottles is that you can convert this 9 oz bottle into a sippy cup when your baby gets to that point.
Ecover Washing-Up Liquid is great for hand washing dishes and uses plant based ingredients for their lemon and aloe vera scents. The liquid is biodegradable and the bottle is recyclable.
GreenRoom is a line of eco-friendly stationary and notebooks made with recycled paper and printed with non-toxic soy ink. I got journals and folders for my birthday and can’t wait to use them to keep tabs on my newborn. They come in a bunch of modern and bright designs and are sold at Target.
Dapple Baby makes products specifically for households with kids. All Dapple products use natural-based ingredients that are environmentally-safe, biodegradable, and free of parabens, SLES, and phthalates, as well as synthetic dyes or fragrances. This winter, we’re all going crazy trying to keep our kids from getting sick so I have Toy and Surface Cleaner for you to keep the germs at bay!
Sinupret is an herbal sinus support product with a blend of European Elder, Common Sorrel, Cowslip, European Vervain and Gentian. It’s a product out of Germany that came to the U.S. in the last year or two and I’ve seen a lot commercials for it lately. There is also a Sinupret for Kids product that Dr. Bob Sears recommends – we’ve just started using it for our daughter. ( disclaimer: remember, I’m not a doctor so you should check with your doc first before using new products ).
Jenerations Baby is a line or organic hair and body care products for kids. The founder, a mom and hairstylist, wanted to create a line of salon quality products that moms could feel good about using on their kids. The Shampoo Bodywash is sulfate and paraben free and has mild ingredients, including extracts of comfrey, chamomile and rosemary. Plus, NO lavender or tea tree oils, which may cause unhealthy increases in hormone levels.
FREE STUFF: 1 lucky winner will get ALL of these green goodies! You can enter in any of these ways – 1 entry for everything you do!
1. Leave a comment telling us what kind of green products you are interested in for future reviews.
